Greater New York seventh- and eighth-grade students experienced a weekend retreat filled with opportunities to be transformed spiritually, mentally, and personally Under the theme “Transformed by Him,” more than 130 students from eight schools in the Greater New York Conference (GNYC), as well as their teachers and several principals, fellowshipped and engaged in learning at Camp Berkshire in Wingdale, New York, October 18-20.
Sponsored by the Greater New York Conference Office of Education, the weekend focused on motivating the students, building self-esteem, and teaching them how to make informed choices, as well as providing a safe and comfortable setting for them to ask questions.
Billwayne Jamel, pastor of GNYC churches in Yonkers, Wingdale, and Bedford Park, provided the spiritual emphasis the entire weekend.
Students also participated in several seminars covering such topics as social media, becoming a Christian young man/young woman, self-esteem, and bullying. Students also led out in various portions of the weekend worship programs. Greater New York Academy students and teachers attended on Sabbath, and provided special music and skits.
After Sabbath, students burned some energy participating in the “Battle of the Classes” before enjoying an evening bonfire and hayride. Sunday featured presentations from professionals (many of them young adults) who shared their testimonies and information about their work.
A retreat such as this has not happened for many years, and Marlene Romeo, GNYC superintendent of schools, hopes it will continue to be an annual tradition.
