On April 8, more than 350 people from around the Atlantic Union Conference sought the Lord for 12 hours during a special Day of Prayer sponsored by the Prayer Ministries department.
“Hope for Troubled Times” was the Prayer Ministries’ theme for April and served as the theme for the Day of Prayer. Each hour included a specific prayer focus with a facilitator or co-facilitator team covering the time slot.
“Each person who facilitated their particular hour put so much planning into it,” said Yvonne Knight, Atlantic Union Conference Prayer Ministries director. Facilitators included Atlantic Union administrators and directors, Prayer Ministries coordinators from each of the six conferences, as well as Prayer Ministries coordinators from local churches. “We had a good involvement of folks from all over the Atlantic Union,” Knight said.
Each hour featured a short inspirational segment based on a chosen theme focusing on groups of people who need hope in such turbulent times. Some of the prayer segments centered on hope for the elderly, hope for first responders, hope for families, hope for coronavirus patients, hope for medical personnel, as well as various ministries and those serving the church as volunteers and workers.
The feedback following the Day of Prayer was positive and encouraging. “Those who came on were eager to pray!” Knight exclaimed. “People wanted to plead [with God] and wanted their requests to go up to God on a united basis.” Although the session was slated to end at 7:00 p.m., the prayers continued going up for almost another half hour, and Knight kept the line open until the last prayer was said.
The theme for May is “Persistent, Prevailing Prayer.” If you missed the Day of Prayer, the Atlantic Union Conference Prayer Ministries team meets each Wednesday at 6:00 a.m., 12 noon, and 6:00 p.m. The hour-long prayer sessions feature a different facilitator focusing on a variation of the monthly theme.
