ESL Program Builds Community and Friendships

  • October 2024
  • Bermuda Conference
  • Bermuda Conference, Education, Youth

For the past year, Larussy Romero has dedicated her Sundays to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the Warwick church. Romero, who serves as Adventist Community Services leader for Bermuda’s Iglesia Ministerio Hermandad, was inspired by personal experience in learning English as a second language to assist others in navigating similar challenges. Recognizing the transformative power of language, Romero felt compelled to give back to the community by equipping others with this essential skill.

The ESL program at the Warwick church is designed to accommodate both beginners and intermediate learners. Over the course of 12 to 15 Sundays, the program provides comprehensive lessons that cover fundamental language skills. These sessions serve not only as language classes but also as a platform for cultural exchange, mutual support, and personal growth.

As a member of Iglesia Ministerio Hermandad, Romero is proud to contribute to a community service initiative provided and funded by her church. While the classes are held at the Warwick church, the support from Iglesia Ministerio Hermandad highlights their commitment to serving the wider community.

Romero’s role as an ESL teacher is driven by a desire to serve, with the hope that through this ministry, others will see the love and compassion of Jesus reflected in her actions. Her aim is for this work to empower students while also inspiring others to embark on similar journeys of service and community engagement.

Throughout this journey, she has witnessed remarkable progress and resilience among the ESL students. Their determination and enthusiasm continue to inspire, reaffirming the value of the program. Teaching ESL at the church has enriched the lives of the students and deeply impacted the teacher, reinforcing the belief that language can bridge gaps and build stronger communities.

Romero encourages anyone with a passion for service to consider similar opportunities. By sharing skills and time, meaningful differences can be made in the lives of others, while experiencing the profound joy of serving in return.
