ACS Bermuda: Celebrating 50 Years of Ministry

  • October 2024

  • Bermuda Conference

Fifty years ago, a small but dedicated group of individuals in the Bermuda Conference set out with a profound mission—to serve and uplift their community. What began as a modest initiative has blossomed into a cornerstone of support, providing vital resources and services to countless individuals and families. Today, Adventist Community Services (ACS) Bermuda stands as a beacon of hope, offering everything from food, shelter, and health care to educational programs, counseling, and job training. This golden anniversary is not just a milestone; it’s a celebration of half a century of transformation, resilience, and service.

Over the past five decades, ACS Bermuda has touched the lives of thousands, bringing relief, hope, and opportunities to those in need. ACS has addressed food insecurity through feeding programs by providing cooked meals, food baskets, and vouchers to vulnerable community members. These efforts have been a lifeline for many struggling families, ensuring no one goes hungry.

Since 2004, ACS Bermuda has sponsored GED programs that have empowered hundreds of individuals, allowing them to complete their education and pursue better employment opportunities. ACS also offers in-home assistance for seniors and financial aid for medical needs, supporting their well-being during the golden years of life.

In collaboration with Leonard Gibbons, Bermuda Conference Health Ministries director, and his team, regular health screenings and lifestyle workshops have been instrumental in promoting healthy living. These initiatives have raised awareness about chronic disease prevention and inspired community members to adopt healthier habits for a longer, more fulfilling life.

ACS Bermuda’s programs are more than just services; they are lifelines that have strengthened the community and restored hope in the face of adversity.

As ACS Bermuda commemorates their 50th anniversary, they honor the pioneers who laid the foundation of this impactful ministry. During the celebrations, ACS Bermuda was privileged to have Eulene Simmons and Betty Reid, two surviving members of the original Community Services Federation (CSF). These women, along with the late Lois Wilson, Mary Scott, David Bento, and John Mello, worked tirelessly to establish today’s organization.

The vision they had 50 years ago, combined with the dedication of countless staff members, volunteers, and donors, has allowed ACS Bermuda to thrive and grow. Their contributions were honored as the bedrock of its success and ACS Bermuda is eternally grateful for the legacy they helped build.

While ACS celebrates the past, it is also mindful of the future. Bermuda’s challenges are ever-changing, but its resolve to meet them remains as strong as ever. ACS Bermuda is committed to evolving with the times, ensuring the ministry stays relevant, accessible, and impactful for the next 50 years—or until Christ returns.

The mandate is clear: to continue serving the community with energy and passion. ACS Bermuda is exploring innovative approaches and expanding its programs to address the pressing needs of today and tomorrow. From mental health support to environmental sustainability initiatives, ACS Bermuda is determined to grow its impact in meaningful ways.

As ACS Bermuda looks ahead, everyone—whether they have been with ACS Bermuda since the beginning or have just recently joined the journey—is invited to recommit to the shared vision. There is still so much work to be done, and together, they can continue to make a profound difference in the lives of those served.

This 50th anniversary is more than a celebration of past achievements; it is a call to action. It reminds everyone of the power of community, the importance of service to God and their fellow man, and the lasting impact that can be created when uniting for a common purpose.
ACS Bermuda is filled with hope and gratitude for the past five decades. They have come a long way, but their journey is far from over. With God’s guidance and the continued support of the community, they are confident that the next 50 years will be even more impactful.
Until Christ returns, ACS Bermuda will remain steadfast in its mission to serve, uplift, and bring hope to those in need. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
