Northeastern Adventist Academy–Long Island Campus continues to embrace Ellen G. White’s vision for Christian education by promoting the harmonious development of mind, body, and spirit through practical learning experiences such as gardening. White taught that true education extends beyond textbooks, preparing students for service to God and others while fostering stewardship, self-sufficiency, and an appreciation for the dignity of labor.
About three years ago, the school purchased gardening curricula from Acquainting Agriculture: Planting with Jesus for grades 1–4 and God in the Garden for grades 5–8. Since then, school leaders prayerfully searched for a gardening instructor to lead the program. After a lengthy wait, they decided the vision could be delayed no longer. On April 2, 2026, the principal and two dedicated teachers stepped forward in faith to launch the gardening classes themselves.
The program is helping bring a key element of Adventist education to life. Through hands-on learning, students are developing responsibility, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle habits while gaining a deeper appreciation for God’s creation. They are also acquiring practical life skills and strengthening Christian character.
The school plans to expand the program by incorporating financial literacy instruction. In addition to learning how to grow food, students will explore stewardship, budgeting, entrepreneurship, and wise financial management. They will also sell produce through a campus market, gaining firsthand experience in business operations, customer service, and financial responsibility.
This holistic approach reflects the Adventist philosophy of education by preparing students academically, practically, spiritually, and financially for lives of meaningful service.
