A beautiful mural with a powerful Bible promise now graces the wall of the stage in the gymnasium at Oakview Preparatory School in Yonkers, New York. The mural was officially unveiled and dedicated at a memorable ceremony on June 2.
As part of the school’s beautification process, the administration decided to have a mural painted in the gymnasium. Dorrette Anderson, chair of the Bronx Westchester Education Committee (BWEC), was instrumental in securing the funds to finance the project. Oakview students, faculty, and staff are deeply grateful to the BWEC members for their continued support of the school they helped establish.
The mural was designed by Andrew Jamel (pictured), an alumnus of Oakview, with assistance from his father, Billwayne Jamel, a Greater New York Conference pastor. Through the beautiful and culturally diverse children depicted in the mural and the powerful scripture verse, Oakview students now and in the years to come will be able to see a reflection of themselves and be inspired by the scripture message.
As part of the service, talented Oakview upper-level students conducted a rousing song service, and Kelsey Adams, a seventh-grade student, gave a lovely vocal solo. The ceremony was well attended by distinguished guests, including Maria Thomas, Greater New York Conference (GNYC) Superintendent of Schools; BWEC members Dorrette Anderson and Louise Williams; and the artist’s parents, friends, and family members.
The ceremony’s highlight was the unveiling conducted by Sharon Mohammed and Alicia Stokes. Following the unveiling, Conrad White, GNYC pastor and assistant ministerial director, presented an impactful dedication message. In his message, he pointed out that the children in the mural are from different backgrounds and cultures but are one in Jesus. He asserted that the mural teaches us what Ephesians 4:5 (CEB) says: “There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” Oakview leadership prays that the mural will always remind the students that they are one in Jesus.
In a society marked by racial and cultural injustice, Oakview wants its students to understand that all people are worthy and capable of achieving success. Philippians 4:13 (NKJV) says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse is inscribed in the mural to help Oakview students understand that all things can be achieved with God’s help. May the mural forever inspire hope in all who gaze upon it.
