The Indicator Magazine Gets a 21st Century Makeover

While doing some research on the New York Conference (NYC) history, Claudio Gomez, NYC executive secretary, discovered some old copies of The New York Indicator, a magazine published in the 1900s by the New York Conference and Tract Society. At the same time, Reynolds Rodriguez, NYC communication director, was finalizing plans for the conference’s new weekly online program. Gomez presented his hidden treasure, and they all agreed that The Indicator was a fitting name for this new program.

On May 8, 2020, The Indicator made its digital debut. The program utilizes an interactive video format via Zoom that is streamed live on Facebook (facebook.com/NYConference). Each episode provides conference news and updates and features a special guest to discuss current issues as they relate to the mission of the church. Rodriguez and his cohosts, Miguel Crespo, NYC president, and Gomez, interview guests, take prayer requests, pray, and share testimonies from viewers interacting in the Facebook comments section.

In its first season, The Indicator transitioned to a monthly program as churches reopened and resumed services, but that change has not affected the number of people tuning in, which has more than doubled. Topics covered in 2020 included the mission and diversity of the conference, church planting, and the coronavirus and its impact on the church. In January 2021, The Indicator kicked off its second season discussing religious liberty and focused on emotional and mental health during the coronavirus in its February broadcast.
