It all began with a conversation between a small church pastor with approximately 10-15 active members and a conference president.
One was praying about ways to connect with a community that increasingly views church as irrelevant to their lives. The other was praying for wisdom, saying, “This group often has little or no Bible knowledge and turns to the Internet for education, inspiration, entertainment, and friendships. How can we enter their world in a way that will engage, inspire, and educate them about the life-changing message of our soon-coming King?”
The conversation between the two parties led to the creation of the “Try Jesus, Auburn” project. The main feature is an online podcast specifically designed for and marketed to this demographic in the local community of Auburn, New York.
Podcast hosts Dustin Hall, Auburn church pastor, and Miguel Crespo, New York Conference president (pictured), visit local sites and discuss their historical significance. Through a lively, conversational format, they present essential biblical truths in language anyone can understand. The content also includes commentary on current events and community-based topics. Viewers have expressed appreciation for the hosts’ balanced mix of friendship and humor and the clear presentation of Bible truths.
The podcast has gained a significant following in Auburn using Auburn-focused social media, reels, and multiple online platforms. In August alone, their website, www.tryjesusauburn.com, saw over 1,800 unique visitors, with their other accounts gaining new local followers daily.
Recently, the outreach expanded from digital to in-person by hosting a back-to-school giveaway for local district teachers. More than 150 public school teachers attended the event, and many received gift packages to start the school year. More teachers attended than could be served. The podcast also partnered with the Booker T. Washington Community Center to distribute back-to-school supplies to over 400 students. During the event, 40 people recorded live questions that will be answered in future podcast episodes. Other in-person events being are planned to connect with online followers, including fun meetups such as bowling, ice cream socials, and Bible classes.
