The Hampden, Maine, group that meets every Sabbath in a community building is not large—about 15 to 25 people attend on any given week. They are not an official church or even a company. Still, they are deeply committed to the mission of reaching their community for Christ.
Gloria Misambu immigrated to the United States in 2021 to begin nursing school at Husson University. Born in the Congo, she walked to safety in South Africa with her uncle when she was 5 years old—a journey that took an entire year. After moving to Maine, an Adventist classmate invited her to attend services in Hampden. Touched by the love, acceptance, and biblical truth she experienced there, Gloria began attending every Sabbath.
David and Joyce Lanyi started Bible studies with her and lovingly “adopted” her as their granddaughter. The entire group embraced and supported her as well. Pastor Harry Sabnani completed her baptismal preparation and baptized her in Pushaw Pond in Orono on September 20, surrounded by her church family.
Gloria will graduate with a four-year nursing degree in June. She is now a cherished member of this small group with a big heart.
